ROG Phone – The ULTIMATE Gaming Smartphone

– [Saf] What’s up YouTube,
Saf here on SuperSafTV. And this is the ROG Phone, A phone made for gamers by the
Republic of Gamers from ASUS, who are known for their
PC gaming hardware. First up, looking at the build and design, you can see that it has
quite a unique look. There’s a metal frame with a
curved glass panel at the back. And the device has a similar
footprint to something like the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. It feels premium in the hand, and actually like the curved edges which make it more comfortable to hold. Unlike the hard edges of the Razer Phone, which we’ll of course be making lots of references to in this video. You might have noticed that the ROG logo at the back is backlit, and you have full control of the color, so you can have it static,
breathing, strobing, or have a color cycle as well. Now what’s cool about the design, pun intended, is that the device has a 3D
vapor-chamber cooling system which gives 60 percent improved
CPU cooling efficiency, and five times longer peak endurance. You can see these two
openings at the back, which will help with the cooling process. And on the right hand side as well as the volume
rocker and power button, there’s what ROG are calling
air triggers on either side. These are basically sensors, and the ways these work
is pretty impressive. You can tap on them during
gaming to enhance your controls. And you can actually map these
wherever you like onscreen. At the bottom you’ll be pleased to know that we do have a 3.5
millimeter headphone jack, yay, as well as that you
have a USB type-C input. But things get really interesting on the left hand side where there are two additional USB ports together. This is firstly so you
can charge the device without having to interrupt your landscape gaming experience. But more importantly, to
connect the AeroActive cooler. So this is an accessory that
is included inside the box. And once you’ve connected it, it will give you an actual cooling boost. But on top of that it’ll
give you a USB-C port and an additional 3.5
millimeter headphone jack. And this way if you’re
gaming in landscape mode, then these things will
not come in the way. And there’s also an ROG backlit logo on the AeroActive cooler, which works in the same way as the logo on the back of the device. We’ve got a fingerprint
scanner at the back, to which is in a slightly weird shape, but I’m assuming it’s intended
for use in landscape mode which is why it’s positioned in this way. Right, now moving over to the front, this is where we’ve got a key feature, and that’s the six-inch AMOLED HDR display with a 90 hertz refresh rate and a one millisecond pixel response time. Now this thing is smooth. Yes the Razer phone has 120 hertz, but that’s an LCD display
and in my opinion, AMOLED displays are generally much better in terms of contrast and brightness. And my impressions of
the ROG Phone display are very positive overall. The resolution is full HD+ so we don’t have quite
HD like the Razer phone But the pixel density is pretty high and the low resolution should help you get more battery life. The bezels aren’t as small as lots of other devices out there but you do have
front-firing stereo speakers and there’s no notch, so I’m sure this won’t
be a problem for most. I’ve only spent a short
time with the device, but the stereo speakers
sounded pretty good to me. Right now let’s talk
about the performance. Of course this is a gaming device. And they have stacked this up to the max. It’s powered by the Qualcomm
Snapdragon 845 processor, which was expected, but ROG have actually worked with Qualcomm to fine-tune this, giving a CPU clock
speed of 2.96 gigahertz, optimizing for lag-free performance. With that you have eight gigabytes of RAM, and the ROG Phone will
come with either 128 or a whopping 512 gigabytes of storage. However unfortunately there
is no MicroSD card slot, something you probably won’t need if you go for the 512 gig version. But you do have dual SIMs. Now because of these
internals on the optimization, the ROG Phone scores the highest out of all smartphones in
pretty much every benchmark. And should get you through anything that you throw at it with ease. The device will be running Android version 8.1 out of the box with a custom UI to make the most out of the gaming features. And you can do things
like squeezing the device kind of like the Pixel 2, but instead of launching Google Assistant, this will activate X-mode, which is going to block notifications but also give you optimal
gaming performance. For the battery you’ve got
a massive 4000 mH capacity which ROG say will give you up to seven hours of wi-fi gameplay, and you also have ROG
hypercharge technology and this will give you 60% of battery life in just 33 minutes. Of course this all sounds really good, but we’ll have to test it all out. Now ROG are really emphasizing
on the gaming capabilities of this phone and they are going to have additional accessories available to purchase separately. These include a mobile desktop dock which will let you connect the ROG Phone to a display keyboard and mouse. Now what’s really cool about this is that you can map the keyboard keys and mouse clicks to
anywhere on your display, similar to the air triggers. And I can already see that this is really going to enhance
that gaming experience. There’s a twin-view
dock which will give you an additional display and that’ll be ideal for livestreaming when gaming. And there’s also a Gamevice dock that will give you console controls and wireless display connectivity. Now you may have noticed that I haven’t really
talked about the cameras, and that’s because I haven’t
been given too much information about the cameras, apart from the fact
that they’re going to be pretty much the same
as the ASUS Zenfone 5z. So a dual-camera setup with a primary twelve megapixel
camera and an f1.8 aperture as well as a secondary
wide-angle eight megapixel camera with an f2.0 aperture. For the front-facing camera, eight megapixels with an f2.0 aperture. Now I haven’t really used
the Zenfone 5z enough to comment on the quality
of the cameras as yet so we’ll have to see how they perform once we have the retail unit in hand. I just hope it’s not a similar case like the Razer phone
where the cameras were the weakest thing of the phone overall. Finally I haven’t been given any pricing and availability information
about the ROG Phone or any of the accessories, so I’ll try to leave some
links in the description below as soon as I have it. And that is the ROG Phone. What do you guys think of it? Definitely drop me a comment
below and let me know. In my opinion this does
look very promising, and I’m pretty impressed overall how they’ve built this thing, specifically for gamers
from the ground up, with features like the
90 hertz AMOLED display, the optimized CPU, the stereo speakers, the air trigger controls, the triple USBs, et cetera et cetera. But also how this isn’t too bulky and is a similar size to other smartphones. Of course we’ll be having
lots more detailed coverage of the ROG phone once the
retail unit is available and if you want to see
that coverage first, then be sure to subscribe
and switch on notifications so you don’t miss anything. I hope you enjoyed this
video and find it useful. If you did, then do hit that
thumbs up button for me. Thanks for watching, this
is Saf on SuperSafTV. And I’ll see you next time.

  1. Has headphone jack check
    No notch: check
    top end specs: check
ticks 3 of my most important boxes. this is a GOOD phone
now if this phone is cheaper than iPhone X or similar pricing as Razer phone.. yes this is a BEAST phone

  2. OMG this gaming phone is <3. I'm in love with it's each and every spec specially that black led logo. Saf plz do a camera comparison once you get it's retail unit. Btw love your videos.

  3. And you'll just play it with 2d game. Guessing $1000 for sd845 type of phone. Would rather stick with psvita. Cheaper and true games that you can play.

  4. This thing is really built for gaming…!!! whatever was missing from the Razor phone… it's all here..!!

  5. Everything is good until you say that the phone has NO micro SD card slot.. It's a bummer.. Why essential port/parts needs to be remove?

  6. Looks sweet, definitely going to keep an eye on this phone, not a fan of that skin though…. looks like a shitty reskin you can download for free…

  7. illuminati confirmed. horus all seeing eyes on the back of the phone. attention illuminati is upon us to track all our life in the name of gaming.

  8. I really can't wait for the performance review. Sounds like a beast but does it do what they say¿

  9. Not many people do actual gaming on a smartphone…. but it should sell well because it is a great device with futureproof specs imho

  10. It looks very cool but it would be wasted on me. I don't give a toss about video games, I've got better things to waste my life on. That said, if I were given this device, I definitely wouldn't say "no" even though I'd immediately bung it into a plastic case thereby making that bling (read cheesy) back lighting redundant.

  11. I would love to see if you can run the oculus rift or htc vive using this phone and the dock. That would be the ultimate power test.

  12. It's really good phone … But awaiting for the full review as that will decide if this can be used as a daily driver

  13. I just don't understand why companies would omit the MicroSD Card slot. There's just no reason that makes any sense to me.

  14. This phone is insane and I think it's best phone right know in everything , BUT there are things I didn't like about this phone ( 1-not waterproof. 2-can't put memory card. 3-i wish the resolution of the screen was higher at least like the S9+.) I wanted to buy this phone but the things I said is the reason for me to not buy it I think I gonna keep my gorges Samsung S7 Edge for a longer time 🙂

  15. fuck it!! i will dump the note 9 for this beauty. the only down side is camera performance. but i use my mobile for more gaming than taking photos. i will get my hands on it asa they release it <3
